Five-Step Process
|
Three points to consider if you are applying to graduate schools and professional schools:
1. Competition during the application process to graduate schools has continued to rise over the past few years. In addition to GPA’s and test scores, admission committees are looking for well-rounded individuals who express themselves clearly and confidently. Your application letter (or letter of intent) creates the “first impression” in this regard.
2. Your curriculum vitae lists your accomplishments. Your letter of intent lets you narrate them into a coherent whole, showing that you are at the centre of all these accomplishments as an intelligent, curious, personable individual preparing yourself for a career in which you will be an asset. Graduate schools think of their entire complement of incoming students; not just you. They like to see that you will be a positive addition to the overall community. They also want to see evidence that your commitment to your chosen field of study is well thought-out as a part of your overall life goals. I will help you write a letter of intent in which you present yourself in just such an integrated, coherent, and engaging manner.
3. Finally, while you have already excelled in your studies as an undergraduate, and while you no doubt expect to continue doing so in your post-secondary work, writing your application letters can help you do something else that is equally important to your professional success: focus on your personal passions and consider the ways in which they fuel your current program and career choices. By clarifying your personal interests in light of your career goals, you will be able to synthesize the two so they reflect the sort of integrity that is necessary for prolonged engagement with ideas and people in diverse professional and academic communities.
